In other posts, I’ve covered everything from Italian to Ancient Egyptian. This time, we’re covering ancient Celtic names. I’ve included pronunciations where I could find them, since it can be very difficult to figure that out from the spellings.

An important note: I’m listing names that I think sound cool for RPG game purposes. I’m not worried about historical accuracy. If you’re looking for a name for historical re-enactment, please check out my list of sources at the end of this post. I also don’t usually cover name meanings, but again, most of my sources list those. Finally, I tend to stay away from names that are currently in common usage. I figure if you were interested in those, you wouldn’t be looking at this list.

These names are broken into names that are traditionally male and traditionally female. I chose to retain these distinctions in all of my Beyond Fred posts. Use these names however you want. There is no reason you can’t name a female character “Drest” or a male character “Brigit.”

Male Names

Áed
Ailill
<g class="gr_ gr_777 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="777" data-gr-id="777">Airril</g>
Aodh
Aonghus
Bedwyr
Blàthan
Bréandan
Cadeyrn
Cáel
Caradoc
Cian
<g class="gr_ gr_412 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="412" data-gr-id="412">Cuconnacht</g>
Cumaighe
Dáire
<g class="gr_ gr_413 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="413" data-gr-id="413">Dathi</g>
Diarmait
<g class="gr_ gr_414 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="414" data-gr-id="414">Drest</g>
Dubhalethe
Éibhir
<g class="gr_ gr_415 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="415" data-gr-id="415">Elisedd</g>
Eònan
Fachtna
Fáelán
Ferdorach
Fiachra
Galchobhar
<g class="gr_ gr_416 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="416" data-gr-id="416">Gwalchmei</g>
Gwydion
<g class="gr_ gr_417 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="417" data-gr-id="417">Haerviu</g>
Heremon
<g class="gr_ gr_418 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="418" data-gr-id="418">Iudicael</g>
<g class="gr_ gr_1299 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="1299" data-gr-id="1299">Laise</g>
Lleu
Lóegaire
Lughaidh
Lugus
Máedóc
Máel Sechnaill
Melaghlin
Morcant
Murchadh
Neas
Ninian
<g class="gr_ gr_1686 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="1686" data-gr-id="1686">Nilidh</g>
Odhran
Oisín
<g class="gr_ gr_1917 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="1917" data-gr-id="1917">Onchu</g>
Pryderi
Pwyll
Ruadhri
Ruairidh
Sealbhach
Sláine
Sluaghadhán
<g class="gr_ gr_2278 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="2278" data-gr-id="2278">Taog</g>
Toirdelbach
Tomoltach
Tristan
Ualraig
Uthyr

Female Names

Agrona
Angharad
Bébinn
Beathag
Bláthnat
Brigit
Caoimhe
Caitir
Céibhfhionn
Clíodhna
Daireann
Derdriu
Doirend
Dolidh
Éimhear
Eithne
Emer
Fedelmid
Finola
Fionnuala
Flanna
Gormal
Graine
Granya
Gwenhwyfar
Latharna
Lewella
Luigsech
Maeve
Meadhbh
Mór Ríoghain
Morag
Muirenn
Mùirne
Neasa
Niamh
<g class="gr_ gr_451 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="451" data-gr-id="451">Oighrig</g>
Rhiannon
Ríghnach
Ròs
Sadhbh
Seàrlaid
<g class="gr_ gr_452 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="452" data-gr-id="452">Sionann</g>
Sláine
Slàinidh
Teàrlag
Una

References

Ancient Irish Proper Names

Behind the Name: Ancient Celtic

Scottish First Names

Traditional Gaelic Names

Other ‘Beyond Fred’
